Excerpt from Letter 1.
Sarah Latham · February 27, 1692
They come to me by the back path after dusk, wrapped in heavy cloaks, seeking a tincture for a cough or an ointment for a milk-sick cow. They take what I offer, press a coin or a small sack of grain into my hand, and vanish into the dark, their eyes never quite meeting mine. They need the medicine, but they distrust the hand that prepares it.
